DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
Tempera on panel: 21.5 x 16.5 cm.
Fragment of a predella, cut to form the door of a tabernacle. Modification carried out in the 16th century.
The format of this work and its theme connect it to the Descent from the Cross, housed in the Museum, and suggest that it may be a predella from the partially reconstructed polyptych, as several specialists believe.
One cannot help but admire the delicacy of its pictorial treatment and the dramatic intensity that Christ exudes from this small format.
It is speculated that the small wooden panel, originally from the Hospital of Santa Maria della Croce, was cut and reshaped, drilled to accommodate a lock, and finally fitted with two hinges to serve as a tabernacle door.
In its current form, this small panel retains a carved Baroque-style frame that appears somewhat anachronistic.
