The local community, already existing at the time of the Etruscans, was equipped with a first fortification under the dominion of the Cacciaconti, being Chiusure the highest observation point of the vast territory of the Crete.

In 1265 under the Sienese dominion, the castle was consolidated and strengthened as a fortified structure in defense of the south-western border of the Republic of Siena.

From 1333 the castle became "Rocca dei Tolomei" following the purchase, by the powerful Sienese family, of the whole village and the surrounding lands not yet owned by it.

After the fall of the Republic of Siena, the castle lost all its defensive importance and was the object of different uses. Today, the main structure of the castle has been converted into a residence for the elderly.
