After a complex campaign of restorations, the Museum into Palazzo Corboli has opened in 2002 to present again to the public the works which were previously exposed in the Etruscan museum and in that of Sacred Art. On the second floor, it is possible to admire the archaeological material which has been found in the last 50 years in the surrounding communes to testify the ancient happenings of the High Valley of the Ombrone. Among these, stand out the excavations of the necropolis of the Poggione, with ivories and bucchero spools, the funeral equipment of the tumulus of the Molinello, with rare examples of archaic sculpture and metallic rests, and finally the reconstruction of the grave of Poggio Pinci, which may be dated between the V and I century B.C. and provided with travertine and tuff urns, ceramics with red images, bronze-vessels, mirrors and goldsmithery. The section of Sacred Art on the contrary begins with a series of works which testify the political and religious local history, until the Middle Ages, when Asciano became a real economic centre which attracted the rich merchant families of Siena. Here there is a sort of “painting revelation: a series of paintings made by the main sienese artists from the XIV to the XVI century: Segna di Buonaventura, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the “Maestro dell’Osservanza”, Matteo di Giovanni,Rutilio Manetti, Bernardino Mei and Francesco Nasini. There are also precious wooden sculptures like those by Giovanni Pisano and Francesco di valdambrino. Of particular interest are some rooms of the Palace which still keep the paintings of ethic-political subject, of the second half of the XIV century. Remarkable is also the collection of ceramics, goldsmitheries and liturgical furnishing.
